Assam: Two APS officer arrested in connection to APSC cash-for-job scam

The two arrested civil servants are being interrogated at the Special Branch (SB) of Assam Police in Guwahati. Police sources said.

GUWAHATI-   The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police has arrested two APS officer  in connection with the 2014 Assam Public Service Commission ( APSC ) cash-for-jobs scam.

The two arrested civil servants are being interrogated at the Special Branch (SB) of Assam Police in Guwahati. This information has been given by SIT.

Among the 34 civil servant officers, two APS officers have been arrested in the 2014 Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scam. The arrested officers have been identified as Shahjahan Sarkar and Aishwarya Jeevan Baruah in connection to the matter.

The names of all 34 civil servants were implicated in the inquiry report of the Justice (retd.) Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission.

Initially, when the APSC scam came to light in 2017–19, everyone, be it job seekers or the general public, lost faith in the government. But the recent steps taken by the government towards those involved in the APSC scam have given hope to almost everyone.

The judicial inquiry commission had recommended the government to lead a probe into the anomalies in the appointments conducted by the APSC in 2013. Congress was in power in Assam till 2016.

The BJP-led government in the state constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the anomalies detected by the commission.

APSC chairman Rakesh Paul and a few other senior officers were arrested in 2016 in connection with the case. Paul, however, was granted bail by a court in March this year after six years behind the bars.

Sources said the officers were being interrogated in connection with the case. Some of them are likely to be arrested.
