Manipur: At least 13 people kidnapped from different parts of state in a week

IMPHAL-   At least 13 people were abducted in Manipur between May 8 and May 13, including four Manipur Police personnel, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, a suspected drug dealer and five civilians. Hindustan Times mentioned in it’s report.

Security forces told the newspaper that the actual number of abducted people could be much higher, as families often do not informed the police.

The report said that Manipur Police has registered FIRs in these cases and arrested at least 10 people.

More than a year after ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023, the abductions have highlighted how divided the state is today. Although the intensity of violence has reduced, the state has virtually been divided into two, with the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities leading completely separate lives.

The Indian Express in its report  highlighted that this divide extends to the police as well: ‘Like the civilian population, the Kuki-Zomi policemen of Kangpokpi district – where they are the majority – are facing deep divisions and lines drawn by conflict. Now they do not work in Meitei dominated areas of the state, while Meitei policemen also do not go to Kuki-Zomi dominated areas.

A central security official told Hindustan Times, ‘The four abducted policemen are neither Meitei nor Kuki. They were returning with some household items from the abandoned house of a colleague (a Kuki policeman), who had to flee his home during the ethnic conflict last year. That Kuki policeman could not return home due to caste division. Arambai Tenggol came to know about this and kidnapped the four policemen from the road. They  also took pictures of the policemen being tortured and spread them in his WhatsApp group in the valley, the report said.

Let us tell you that in the last one year, about 225 people have lost their lives in the violence in the state and at least 50,000 people are still displaced. Weapons and ammunition were also looted from the police armoury, which were used in the violence.

According to Hindustan Times, the sudden increase in kidnapping and extortion cases is being attributed to ‘economic loss, unemployment, need for money to buy arms or conduct operations and the presence of arms and ammunition among the civilian population’ Is.
