Security Tightened in Manipur’s Senapati Following Violent Protests
Additional security has been deployed in Senapati district after a protest over a security operation turned violent, leading to arson, vandalism and clashes with security forces.

SENAPATI- Tension continued in parts of Manipur’s Senapati district on Wednesday following violent protests that broke out on Monday night after a security operation targeting suspected violations of the NSCN-IM ceasefire.
According to officials, the unrest began around 9:30 pm on July 14 in Makuilongdi village and adjoining areas. A large crowd reportedly resorted to stone-pelting, overturned trucks and set fire to Assam Rifles vehicles, a civilian car and a waiting shed located near an Assam Rifles base.
The protest was triggered by a search operation carried out by security forces in the area. Officials said the operation was aimed at investigating suspected ceasefire violations involving the NSCN-IM.

To disperse the crowd, security personnel used tear gas shells and fired blank rounds. Authorities stated that no injuries were reported during the incident, and the situation was brought under control by around midnight.
Despite the restoration of order, security agencies have remained on high alert as tensions continue to prevail in sensitive areas of the district. Additional security personnel have been deployed to prevent any further escalation.
The incident comes against the backdrop of Manipur’s prolonged ethnic unrest, which has continued since May 2023. It also follows a July 6 ambush in the region in which two Assam Rifles personnel lost their lives, highlighting the fragile security situation in parts of the state.

Manipur has witnessed recurring episodes of violence, protests and blockades linked to ethnic divisions, particularly involving the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The security environment has also been influenced by issues relating to insurgent groups and demands for greater autonomy in certain areas.
Meanwhile, the state government has appealed for restraint from all sections of society. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy, strengthening public safety and continuing development initiatives in violence-affected areas.
Authorities have urged citizens and media organisations to avoid circulating unverified information, cautioning that misinformation could aggravate the already sensitive situation. Officials said they are closely monitoring developments, and further information is expected as investigations continue.
