Assam: B. Borooah College Alumni Association Pays Heartfelt Tribute to ‘Surjyakontha’ Zubeen Garg
The event brought together artists, alumni, admirers, and cultural figures to honour the unparalleled contributions of the late icon to the world of music and the arts.

Borooah College Alumni Association organised a moving memorial event titled ‘Surjyakontha’ in remembrance of the legendary Assamese artist Zubeen Garg, at the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Auditorium of B. Borooah College. The event brought together artists, alumni, admirers, and cultural figures to honour the unparalleled contributions of the late icon to the world of music and the arts.
Delivering the keynote memorial address, senior journalist Gautam Sharma described Zubeen Garg as “an artist who taught us to express directly, embodying an ideal.” Sharma emphasised that Zubeen’s artistic reach went far beyond singing—encompassing roles as a lyricist, composer, poet, writer, actor, and filmmaker, which collectively defined his extraordinary creative journey.

He noted that Zubeen Garg revitalised the Assamese musical landscape and left an indelible imprint on India’s cultural heritage.
The commemoration began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and floral tributes to ‘Surjyakontha’. Dr. Bijoy Sankar Goswami, General Secretary of the Alumni Association, elaborated on the event’s significance, while Dr. Satyendra Nath Barman, Principal of B. Borooah College, reflected on Zubeen’s deep connection with the institution.
A highlight of the event was the release of the souvenir publication ‘Surjyakontha’, unveiled by noted artistes Diganta Bharati, Alaap Dudul Saikia, and Sabin Das, all of whom had shared close creative partnerships with Zubeen Garg.
In an emotional tribute, Diganta Bharati shared personal anecdotes from his years of collaboration with Zubeen, observing that “Zubeen achieved in half a century what most artists dream of accomplishing in a hundred years.” Hemchandra Pathak, editor of the souvenir and Zubeen’s childhood friend, reminisced about their enduring friendship spanning over four decades.
Jagadish Chandra Goswami, President of the Alumni Association and retired professor, recalled Zubeen’s early distinction in 1992, when he won a gold medal in Western music at the Guwahati University Youth Festival—a moment Goswami described as “the spark that ignited Zubeen’s lifelong artistic flame.”
The event also featured soulful musical performances by noted vocalists including Nirmali Das, Riaz Talukdar, Dr. Nijan Pegu, Angarika Ayushi Borah, Bishal Kalita, and Jyotishman Kalita, who rendered timeless songs originally sung by Zubeen Garg.

Adding a touch of nostalgia, Chinmoy Jyoti Saikia from Kuwaritol, Nagaon—an ardent collector of Zubeen’s music—displayed rare audio cassettes and CDs and played selections on a classic tape recorder.
The poignant evening concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr. Satyabrata Baruah, followed by a collective rendition of Zubeen’s immortal song “Mayabini Raatir Bukut…”, leaving the audience in emotional reflection.
Zubeen Garg’s untimely passing has left a profound void in India’s cultural landscape. His multifaceted artistry and fearless expression continue to inspire generations, defining what many now regard as the ‘Zubeen Era’ in Assamese music and culture.
