Assam CM Predicts BJP “Clean Sweep” in 2026 Assam Polls

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claims BJP-led alliance will secure a resounding win in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, launching a sharp attack on Congress’s Gaurav Gogoi.

GUWAHATI-  Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today expressed strong confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)–led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will achieve a “clean sweep” in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters, Sarma predicted a decisive victory for his party and launched a sharp personal attack on Gaurav Gogoi, Assam Congress president and Member of Parliament from Jorhat.

“The BJP will sweep the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam. Gaurav Gogoi will 100 per cent lose the polls here, and then he can go and contest elections in Pakistan,” Sarma said, intensifying his rivalry with the Congress leader. In the past, Sarma has repeatedly accused Gogoi of being linked to Pakistan—a claim that has fueled political tension in the state.

Sarma’s optimism is based, in part, on the NDA’s strong showings in recent rural elections and by-elections. He has forecasted winning up to 95–104 seats in the 126-member state assembly, building on the BJP’s back-to-back successes in 2016 and 2021 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He drew parallels with the NDA’s recent victory in Bihar, suggesting that a similar wave of support could propel the party to a dominant mandate in Assam. According to Sarma, his governance model—centered on development, welfare initiatives, and a strict policy on illegal migration and community encroachments—is resonating with voters.

On the other hand, the opposition, led by the Congress and a seven-party alliance, has pledged to challenge the BJP’s rule, calling out what it describes as “divisive politics.” Despite their unity meeting last week, Sarma dismissed their efforts as ineffective, asserting that the alliance lacks the grassroots strength to derail BJP’s momentum.

Political analysts say the 2026 election will test Sarma’s strategy and the durability of his developmental narrative. While the BJP currently holds incumbency advantage and possesses deep organisational reach, the Congress — backed by Gogoi’s leadership — is banking on anti-incumbency and alliance-building to mount a serious challenge.

With campaigning expected to intensify in the coming months and the Assembly’s term ending in May 2026, Sarma’s bold predictions and confrontational rhetoric suggest an aggressive BJP strategy to secure a potentially historic third term.
