Second Earthquake in Assam within four days

A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck Udalguri district on Thursday evening, days after a stronger 5.1-magnitude quake hit Morigaon, underscoring Assam’s seismic vulnerability.

GUWAHATI-  An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale struck Udalguri district in Assam on Thursday evening at around 7:30 pm, triggering tremors across parts of the state, including the capital city Guwahati. Officials said there were no reports of casualties or damage.

According to preliminary information, the earthquake had a shallow focal depth of around 10 kilometres, a factor that often leads to stronger surface-level tremors despite moderate magnitude. Residents in Udalguri and nearby areas reported brief but noticeable shaking, which caused momentary panic.

The latest tremor comes barely four days after a stronger earthquake of 5.1 magnitude struck Morigaon district on Monday morning.

That earlier quake, which originated at a depth of approximately 50 kilometres, resulted in minor structural damage and injuries to at least three people in Morigaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur and Nagaon districts. Tremors from that event were also felt in parts of Meghalaya and Tripura.

Seismologists have long pointed out that the Northeast region lies in one of India’s most active seismic zones, shaped by the ongoing collision between the Indian tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate. This geological setting makes states such as Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura particularly susceptible to frequent earthquakes.

While earthquakes cannot be prevented, experts and authorities stress the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety protocols to minimise loss of life and property. Local administrations have urged residents to remain alert, follow earthquake safety guidelines and ensure that buildings and infrastructure comply with seismic safety norms.

The back-to-back tremors this week have renewed focus on the need for disaster preparedness, public awareness and resilient infrastructure in the region.
