Assam: Toll Gate Violence Blocks NH-27 in Gosaigaon
Truck drivers from Bihar and local operators were assaulted at Telipara toll gate in Kokrajhar after refusing illegal "overload" payments, leading to serious injuries, police inaction allegations and a major NH-27 blockade.

GOSAIGAON- A tense situation prevailed at the Telipara toll gate in Gosaigaon, Kokrajhar district, after truck drivers accused toll gate staff of demanding illegal payments from out-of-state goods vehicles under the pretext of excess loading, leading to violent assaults, multiple injuries and a complete blockade of National Highway 27.
According to eyewitnesses and injured drivers, the confrontation escalated when toll personnel and an accompanying group of miscreants physically attacked truck operators—primarily from Bihar and local Gosaigaon—who refused to pay the demanded extra charges beyond official tolls.
Several drivers sustained serious injuries in the clashes, with victims alleging systematic extortion targeting interstate heavy vehicles arriving through the vital East-West Corridor.

Aggrieved drivers claimed toll staff warned them that Gosaigaon police had been “managed,” discouraging complaints, and that uniformed personnel present at the scene failed to intervene during the assaults.
In retaliation, dozens of truckers parked their vehicles across both lanes of NH-27 in front of the toll plaza, creating a massive traffic jam stretching several kilometres and disrupting goods movement between Assam and Northeast states.

Gosaigaon police eventually arrived at the site, dispersed the crowd and restored partial traffic flow after hours of negotiations, but tensions remained high with drivers demanding action against the perpetrators and an end to alleged corrupt practices at the plaza.
Authorities have registered complaints and initiated an investigation into the allegations of illegal collections, assaults and possible police complicity, though no arrests were confirmed at the time of reporting.

The incident highlights recurring complaints about toll gate malpractices across Assam’s highways, where drivers frequently report unofficial “haulage charges,” overload fines without weighbridge verification, and physical coercion by organised groups.
Telipara gate, a critical checkpoint on NH-27 connecting Kokrajhar to Goalpara and beyond, has witnessed similar flare-ups in the past, including arrests in 2025 for extortion rackets involving out-of-state operatives.
Truckers have called for CCTV monitoring, transparent weighing systems and stern action against repeat offenders to prevent future confrontations.
