Zubeen Garg Case: Court Orders Unfreezing Of Shyamkanu Mahanta’s bank accounts

CJM Court in Kamrup rules BNSS provisions inapplicable, directs deposit of ₹16 lakh as SIT probe into singer’s death continues.

GUWAHATI: The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Kamrup district on Monday ordered that the bank accounts of Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the death case of singer Zubeen Garg, be unfrozen. The court observed that the provisions under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were not applicable in the present circumstances.

Mahanta, a festival organiser, is among seven individuals named in the chargesheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police, constituted under its Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

In a related direction, the court ordered another accused, Siddhartha Sharma, to deposit ₹16 lakh with the CID after the probe agency sealed his flat as part of the investigation.

The SIT filed a detailed chargesheet in December 2025 before the CJM Court in Guwahati in connection with Garg’s death. The singer reportedly died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, during a sea outing while attending the North East India Festival.

The chargesheet, described in various reports as running into several thousand pages — ranging from approximately 3,500 to over 12,000 pages — was based on what investigators termed extensive evidence collection. The SIT cited statements from over 300 witnesses, documentary material and forensic findings in support of its conclusions.

Seven individuals were named as accused in the chargesheet. Murder charges were framed against four persons, including Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, band member Shekharjyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta.

Garg’s cousin, Sandipan Garg — a suspended Assam Police officer — was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The remaining accused, including personal security officers, were named for related offences such as criminal conspiracy and breach of trust.

The case has drawn sustained public attention in Assam and beyond, given Garg’s prominence in the state’s cultural landscape. Court proceedings are ongoing, and further hearings are expected as the trial process advances.
