Sikkim Girl Stages Own Kidnapping in Shocking Ransom Hoax, Rescued from Siliguri
A 14-year-old girl from Gangtok allegedly staged her own kidnapping and demanded ₹3 lakh from her parents before being traced to Siliguri by police.

GANGTOK— In a bizarre turn of events that initially sparked widespread panic across Sikkim, a 14-year-old girl from Gangtok was found to have orchestrated her own disappearance and attempted to extort ₹3 lakh from her parents by faking a kidnapping, police revealed today.
The minor girl went missing from her home in Gangtok on March 13, 2026. Her frantic parents reported the case to the Sadar Police Station, suspecting abduction after receiving alarming messages from her phone number. The communications included WhatsApp texts demanding a ransom of ₹3 lakh, accompanied by voice notes in which the girl could be heard crying and claiming she had been kidnapped, with threats of harm if the money was not paid.
The distressing messages quickly circulated on social media, causing public concern and prompting immediate police action. A dedicated search operation was launched, and a special team from Sadar Police Station was dispatched to neighbouring West Bengal.

Through coordinated efforts and sustained investigation, the girl was traced and safely located on March 17 evening (Tuesday) in the SNT (Sikkim Nationalised Transport) area near the bus terminus in Siliguri. She was found wandering alone in the vicinity.
Preliminary inquiries conducted by the police have confirmed that the teenager had deliberately staged her own disappearance. She allegedly sent the ransom demands and fabricated voice notes herself to impersonate a kidnapper and pressure her parents into paying the money.
The girl has been secured by the police team and brought back to Gangtok for further detailed questioning, legal formalities, and counselling. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Justice Code, and the investigation remains ongoing to understand the motives behind the self-staged hoax.

Sikkim Police issued an official statement urging the public not to spread unverified rumours in such sensitive matters involving minors, while commending the swift response that ensured the girl’s safe recovery without any actual harm.
This incident highlights the growing challenges of distinguishing genuine emergencies from self-engineered deceptions in the age of instant messaging and social media amplification. Authorities have appealed to parents and guardians to maintain open communication with children to prevent such extreme actions stemming from possible underlying issues.
Further updates are awaited as the inquiry progresses.
