Amit Shah Endorses Mizoram’s Proposal to Raise Mizo Territorial Army

He assured Lalduhoma of the central government's commitment to expedite the necessary approvals for the formation of the MTA .

NEW DELHI/ MIZORAM – Union Home Minister Amit Shah has extended his support to the Mizoram government’s proposal to establish a Mizo Territorial Army (MTA) battalion. This initiative aims to bolster border security and combat the escalating issue of drug trafficking along the state’s porous frontiers with Myanmar and Bangladesh .

During a recent meeting in New Delhi, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma apprised Shah of the challenges posed by the state’s extensive and unfenced borders, which have become conduits for the smuggling of narcotics, arms, and other contraband.

Lalduhoma emphasized the state’s manpower constraints in addressing these issues and highlighted the potential of the MTA to not only enhance security but also provide employment opportunities for Mizo youth .

Shah acknowledged Mizoram’s status as one of India’s most peaceful states and lauded the Chief Minister’s efforts in maintaining this tranquility.

He assured Lalduhoma of the central government’s commitment to expedite the necessary approvals for the formation of the MTA .

In addition to the MTA proposal, the two leaders discussed several other pertinent issues:

  • Transfer of Lengpui Airport: Shah promised swift action to facilitate the transfer of the state’s primary airport to the Airports Authority of India, aiming to improve infrastructure and connectivity.
  • Reimbursement to Assam Rifles: The Home Minister agreed to reimburse over ₹5.23 crore to the Assam Rifles for infrastructure costs incurred at their former battalion headquarters in Aizawl.
  • Biometric Registration Portal: Shah informed about the Ministry of Home Affairs’ operational online portal for the biometric registration of Myanmar refugees residing in Mizoram, aiming to streamline their identification and support .

The establishment of the Mizo Territorial Army is anticipated to play a pivotal role in enhancing border vigilance, curbing illicit activities, and fostering socio-economic development in the region.
