Assam: 7 killed after consuming spurious country-made liquor in Golaghat

Seven people, including a woman, have died after consuming spurious country-made liquor at Barpathar in Golaghat district of Assam. people reportedly started falling ill after consuming the liquor since Saturday evening.
Locals said several people in Singimari and adjoining villages under Barpathar police station taken ill after consuming illicit liquor. They were admitted to local government hospital and in the last two days, seven have reportedly died.
According to police sources on Sunday said two persons who sold the spurious liquor have been arrested. They were peddling liquor illegally from their fast food joint.
Police swung into action after locals came out in large numbers and tried to dismantle the shop from where the liquor was procured.
Meanwhile the Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Gaurav Bothra has directed district superintendent of excise Bhaben Phukon to visit the area. A magisterial inquiry into the incident has also been instituted and Dhansiri SDO (Civil) Bipul Das has been directed to conduct the probe.
