The arrest has ignited a firestorm of reactions across Assam and beyond. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the media in Guwahati, condemned Islam’s remarks as standing “against the soul of India.” He stated, “Assam will take the strongest possible action against anyone who dares to defend—directly or indirectly—the horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam.
AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal distanced the party from Islam’s comments, expressing regret in a video statement: “I heard about the arrest of Aminul Islam for his remarks on the Pahalgam terrorist attack. It is very unfortunate that he made such a statement. These are not the views of the AIUDF. Our party stands with the Government of India.” Ajmal’s attempt to mitigate the fallout underscores the political sensitivity of the issue, as the AIUDF seeks to maintain its credibility amid public anger.
The Pahalgam terror attack, carried out by militants from The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, targeted tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran Valley, killing 26 people, including 25 Indian tourists and one Nepali citizen. Among the victims was IAF Corporal Tage Hailyang from Arunachal Pradesh, whose death has deeply affected the Northeast
Islam is currently in judicial custody, with the Nagaon police continuing their investigation. The case has been registered under stringent BNS sections, signaling that the authorities intend to pursue severe penalties.
