Assam: BJP hoisted its flag in Samaguri, the stronghold of Congress
The BJP’s biggest win is in Samaguri, a seat with a sizeable minority population that had been represented by Assam Congress heavyweight Rakibul Hussain for five consecutive terms since 2000.
GUWAHATI- BJP hoisted its flag in the stronghold of Congress in Assam’s bypolls. The BJP contested three seats and its candidates won each one – Diplu Ranjan Sarmah in Samaguri, Diganta Ghatowal in Behali, and Nihar Ranjan Das in Dholai.
NAGAON- The BJP’s biggest win is in Samaguri, a seat with a sizeable minority population that had been represented by Assam Congress heavyweight Rakibul Hussain for five consecutive terms since 2000. The BJP registered its first win in the Congress bastion of Samaguri. It was expected that the Congress would retain the seat, which was vacated by Rakibul Hussain, who became the party’s MP from Dhubri. Instead, BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah defeated the Rakibul’s son and Congress candidate Tanzil Hussain.

BEHALI- The Congress took the responsibility for the defeat in Assam by not allowing any of its allies to contest from the Behali constituency. The BJP retained the Behali seat, with its candidate Diganta Ghatowal defeating Congress’ Jayanta Bora.
DHOLAI- Ahead of the bypoll in Dholai, the Congress hit out at the BJP and Nihar Ranjan Das, with the Congress alleging that he is a Bangladeshi. However, he retained the seat for the BJP by defeating Congress rival Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha.

BONGAIGAON- In Bongaigaon, AGP candidate Diptimayi Choudhury defeated Congress candidate Brajenjit
Singha. Ms Choudhury is the wife of AGP veteran Phani Bhushan Choudhury, who vacated the seat after becoming an MP from Barpeta. This is the ninth time that AGP has won the seat in a row.
SIDLI- In Sidli, UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma defeated Bodoland People’s Front’s Sudho Kumar Basumatary by a record margin of 37,016 votes.
