Assam: Guwahati Paralyzed by Severe Waterlogging After Early Morning Downpour

Two to three hours of heavy rain inundate key city roads, causing traffic chaos, power outages, and renewed calls for drainage reform.

GUWAHATI-  A brief but intense spell of rain early Tuesday morning left large parts of Guwahati submerged, disrupting daily life and reigniting concerns over the city’s inadequate drainage infrastructure.

The downpour, lasting approximately two to three hours, resulted in knee-deep water on major roads, including Zoo Road, RG Baruah Road, GS Road, Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar, Guwahati Club, Lachit Nagar, Chandmari, Panjabari, Jorabat, Tarun Nagar, and Survey areas .

The waterlogging led to massive traffic snarls, with commuters stranded for hours. Power outages were reported in several areas, compounding the difficulties faced by residents.

The Indian Meteorological Department’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati issued a weather bulletin warning of thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 50-60 kmph at isolated places over Assam.

This incident has once again highlighted the city’s vulnerability to flooding during heavy rains. In August last year, the Gauhati High Court emphasized the need for the government to take permanent measures to address the problem of flooding in the city.
