Kamakhya Temple Gears Up for Annual Ambubachi Mela

Pilgrims from across India have started arriving at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati as preparations intensify for the annual Ambubachi Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in eastern India.

GUWAHATI- Devotees from different parts of the country have begun arriving at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati ahead of the annual Ambubachi Mela, one of the most significant religious gatherings in eastern India. The four-day festival, which celebrates the annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, is scheduled to begin on June 22 and conclude on June 26.

According to Kamakhya Temple priest Kabindra Prasad, the Ambubachi Mela will commence at 9:08 PM on June 22. During the observance, the sanctum sanctorum of the temple will remain closed for three days, reflecting the belief that Goddess Kamakhya undergoes her annual menstrual cycle during this period.

“Ambubachi Mela this year will begin on June 22 at 9:08 PM. On June 26, after the special puja, darshan will be conducted for all devotees. The Mela Committee is handling all preparations collaboratively,” Prasad said.

The Ambubachi Mela is held annually at the historic Kamakhya Temple atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati. Often referred to as the “Mahakumbh of the East,” the festival is unique in that it celebrates fertility and womanhood through the worship of the divine feminine. The event attracts lakhs of pilgrims, ascetics, sadhus, and tourists from across India and abroad.

During the three-day closure of the sanctum, ritual worship, agricultural activities, and certain household practices are traditionally suspended. On the fourth day, the temple reopens following special rituals, allowing devotees to receive darshan and seek blessings from the deity.

With the festival approaching, the temple complex has witnessed a steady increase in footfall. Many devotees expressed deep spiritual satisfaction after offering prayers at the revered shrine.

Pradeep Chatterjee, a devotee from West Bengal, described the temple as a place of extraordinary spiritual energy.

“The place is very energetic; I felt a different kind of energy here. The darshan was excellent, and there is a sense of fulfillment that one feels after visiting this place,” he said.

Another devotee, Arun Kumar from Bihar, said the visit brought him a sense of peace and spiritual contentment.

“The darshan was wonderful, and I felt a great sense of peace here. My prayer is that Mother Goddess blesses everyone and fulfills their wishes,” he said.

Authorities and members of the Ambubachi Mela Committee are currently coordinating arrangements related to crowd management, accommodation, sanitation, healthcare, and security to facilitate the smooth conduct of the festival.

As one of Assam’s most prominent religious and cultural events, the Ambubachi Mela continues to attract devotees seeking spiritual solace while also drawing attention to the region’s rich religious heritage and traditions.
