Tripura: 1 Dead, 4 Injured as Police fire at protesters near Kanchanpur

A fire man is also among the four injured. They have reportedly been admitted to the district hospital in Dharmanagar.

Agartala:  One agitator has reportedly died after hit by bullet and four injured after Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel opened fire on protestors near Kanchanpur on Saturday. The victim has been identified as a member of the Joint Movement Committee (JMC).

A fire man is also among the four injured. They have reportedly been admitted to the district hospital in Dharmanagar.

The protest was organised by Nagrik Suraksha Manch and Joint Movement Committee against the settlement of Mizoram Bru displaced people at Kanchanpur in North Tripura.

According to sources, protesters set fire to tires and blocked roads in several places of the sub-division. They also ransacked several vehicles, setting them on fire.

The indefinite general strike against the resettlement of displaced Bru people from Mizoram in Kanchanpur of North Tripura has been continuing  and crippled normal life and hit the food stock. Besides, anti-Bru movement, hundreds of poor villagers came out on the road demanding food.

They threatened to block the Assam-Agartala national highway unless the government provided them food and other amenities. The Joint Movement Committee (JMC) however, stated that they would not allow settlement of more than 500 displaced Bru families in Kanchanpur sub-division to maintain ethnic balance.

Leaders of all the political parties, students and women joined the movement, which made life standstill.
