Arunachal: Kiren Rijiju flags off the Brahmaputra Aamantran Abhiyan

PASIGHAT: Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Kiren Rijiju today flagged off the Brahmaputra Aamantran Abhiyan- a river rafting expedition and public outreach programme from Gelling in Upper Siang.

The event is an initiative of the Brahmaputra Board under the Ministry of Jal Shakti with the support of the state government’s of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The main objectives of the event is to act as a public outreach programme aimed at youths and students through a river rafting expedition to popularize the concept of “Living with the River”.

A combined data collection and sampling exercise on river water quality, river sediment, river bank erosion and fish habitat along entire route of the expedition, in collaboration with various institutes of repute.

The rafting expedition will comprise of two legs in India covering about 900km.

The Arunachal leg will start from Gelling and move along the Siang River to Pasighat in East Siang district. Upon entering Dhemaji district in Assam from Pasighat, the Assam leg will start along the Brahmaputra River and will ultimately terminate at Assameralga in South Salmara Mankachar district of Assam near the Indo-Bangladesh border.
