Assam: Rahul Gandhi meets Flood Victims in Silchar

SILCHAR-   Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday met flood-affected people in Assam’s Cachar district before heading to neighbouring Manipur. Rahul Gandhi is on a one-day visit to Assam and Manipur. This is his first visit to the ethnic conflict-hit Manipur after becoming Leader of Opposition.

In Assam, Rahul Gandhi  met with flood victims, party leaders said. Assam Congress leaders apprised me of the situation on ground 60+ deaths, 53,000+ displaced and 24,00,000 affected. These numbers reflect the gross and grave mismanagement by BJP’s double-engine government which came to power with the promise of a “flood-free Assam,” Gandhi said in a social media post.

Assam needs a comprehensive and compassionate vision – proper relief, rehabilitation, and compensation in the short term, and a pan-Northeast water management authority to do everything necessary to control floods in the long term.

I stand with the people of Assam, I am their soldier in Parliament, and I urge the Central govt to extend all possible help and support to the State expeditiously, He said .

Assam is battling severe floods due to days of torrential rainfall, causing landslides and overflowing rivers. About 22.70 lakh people in 28 districts of Assam have been affected by the floods, news agency PTI said. As many as 78 people have been killed in this year’s floods, landslides and storms in the state, the agency report said.

Meanwhile, an Assam Congress delegation led by president Bhupen Borah submitted a memorandum to Rahul Gandhi, urging him to raise the issue of perennial floods in Assam in the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament.
