Assam: Congress MP Rakibul Hussain attacked in Nagaon, CM assures additional security
APCC President Bhupen Borah condemned the attack, emphasizing that such violence has no place in a democratic society.

GUWAHATI/ DHUBRI- Rakibul Hussain, the Congress MP from Dhubri, was attacked by a group of unidentified miscreants while traveling to a Congress workers’ meeting in Gunabari, Samaguri constituency, Nagaon district. The incident took place in broad daylight at Rupahihat New Market, a commercial area in Nagaon, accompanied by his son, Tanzil Hussain, and personal security officers (PSOs).
The incident unfolded when a crowd confronted Hussain, leading to an altercation with his security personnel. Reports indicate that the situation escalated quickly. Amid the chaos, his PSOs reportedly fired shots into the air to disperse the attackers and protect the MP. Hussain himself was unharmed but condemned the attack as an “attempt to intimidate democratic processes,” urging his supporters to remain calm.

The attack has sparked significant concern about law and order in Assam. Local police responded promptly, with Nagaon Superintendent of Police Swapnanil Deka confirming that an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the culprits.
No arrests have been reported as of evening on February 20, 2025, but the police are actively working to verify the circumstances and motives behind the assault.

Rakibul Hussain is a prominent Congress leader who made national headlines in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by winning the Dhubri constituency with a record margin of over 10.12 lakh votes, defeating AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. Before his parliamentary role, he represented Samaguri in the Assam Legislative Assembly for five consecutive terms since 2001, making the area a Congress stronghold.
The attack in Rupahihat, near his former constituency, has raised questions about political tensions, especially given recent electoral rivalries and his son Tanzil’s loss in the Samaguri bypoll to BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarma in November 2024.

Meanwhile, Following the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured security arrangements for Hussain whenever he visits the Samaguri and Rupahihaat areas.
“We have received information that Rakibul was attacked in Rupahihaat. The Superintendent of Police is with him right now, and we will provide security to the Congress leader every time he visits the said areas,” Sarma said during the third day of the budget session.

Congress Workers Protest in Dhubri
Congress workers gathered at the Dhubri District Congress Office on Thursday, February 20, voicing strong opposition to the recent assault on MP Rakibul Hussain in Rupahihat, Nagaon district.
Dhubri District Congress President Abedur Zaman denounced the assault, calling it a direct attack on democracy. He urged party members to stand united and demanded a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
The incident has deepened political tensions in the region, with Congress leaders accusing their rivals of orchestrating intimidation tactics against opposition voices. As the probe continues, the party has intensified its demand for justice and greater protection for political leaders in Assam.
