Manipur: Security Forces Arrest PREPAK, KYKL Cadres

Security forces arrested five cadres of valley-based insurgent groups during an intelligence-based operation along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district.

IMPHAL: Security forces arrested five active cadres of valley-based insurgent groups during an intelligence-based operation along the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal District on March 16, officials said.

The operation was carried out in the border belt between Border Pillars 73 and 75 under the jurisdiction of Moreh Police Station. Authorities stated that the arrests were part of intensified efforts to prevent militant infiltration and disrupt insurgent activities along the sensitive international border.

The arrested individuals were identified as:

  1. Thangjam Ashok Kumar Singh alias Khongthang of Waikhong Village (PREPAK),
  2. Laishram Nipamacha Singh alias Loiya of Sagolmang Awang Leikai (PREPAK)
  3. Thangjam Manimatum Meitei alias Sana of Sugnu Awang Leikai (KYKL),
  4. Laishram Inao Singh alias Sanamacha of Urup Makha Leikai (KCP-MFL) and
  5. Chingangbam Shakti Singh alias Phairen of Lamlai Nongada (KCP-MFL).

Officials said the detainees are believed to be active members of banned insurgent outfits operating in the valley areas of Manipur. No specific recoveries of arms, ammunition or explosives were reported in connection with the arrests.

The arrested cadres were later handed over to authorities at Moreh Police Station for further interrogation and legal proceedings under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other relevant laws.

Security agencies have increased vigilance along the Indo-Myanmar border in recent months, citing concerns about cross-border movement of militants and the presence of armed groups operating in the region. The border areas of Manipur, particularly Tengnoupal district, have historically been considered sensitive due to their proximity to Myanmar.

In a separate operation, police in Senapati District arrested a key accused on March 14 in connection with a March 2 truck arson incident along National Highway-2, officials said.

Authorities described the latest arrests as part of ongoing coordinated counter-insurgency operations involving the Indian Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police aimed at maintaining security and stability in the region.
