Assam CM Condemns Suspected ULFA(I) Attack on Police in Tinsukia
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the ULFA(I) attack on a police camp in Tinsukia, announcing intensified counter-operations.
GUWAHATI- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 22 strongly condemned the pre-dawn militant attack on an Assam Police Commando Battalion camp in Tinsukia district, describing the incident as “highly condemnable” and assuring swift action against those responsible.
The attack, attributed to the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) [ULFA(I)], took place in the early hours at Jagun, near the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border. Militants reportedly fired multiple rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) at the camp, followed by an exchange of gunfire with security forces.
At least four personnel were injured in the incident, with some reported to be in critical condition. The injured were shifted to a medical facility in Dibrugarh for treatment.

Reacting to the development, Sarma stated that security agencies had already launched counter-operations in the area. He expressed confidence that those involved in the attack would be identified and apprehended. Officials confirmed that joint operations by Assam Police and the Army have been intensified, with additional forces deployed across Tinsukia and adjoining areas.
Security officials indicated that the attack site lies in a strategically sensitive region, close to forested terrain and inter-state border areas that have historically been used by insurgent groups for movement and concealment.

The incident has occurred in the run-up to the Assam Assembly elections scheduled in April 2026, a period during which security arrangements have already been heightened across the state. Authorities are examining whether the attack was intended to disrupt the pre-election environment.
Sarma’s response underscores the government’s focus on maintaining law and order amid ongoing security challenges in Upper Assam. Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant as search operations continue to track down the perpetrators.
