Marwari Hospital Marks 110 Years of Service; CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Lauds Community’s ContributIon

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Marwari community's contributions to Assam's economy, culture and healthcare, while neurologist Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah received the Lifetime Achievement Award during the institution's 110th Foundation Day celebrations.

GUWAHATI- Shree Marwari Databya Aushadhalaya (SMDA), the parent body of Marwari Hospital, one of Guwahati’s oldest charitable healthcare institutions, celebrated its 110th Foundation Day on Friday with a commemorative programme at the Pragjyotika ITA Centre.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the event as the chief guest and acknowledged the Marwari community’s longstanding contribution to Assam’s economic, cultural and social development. The programme also marked more than a century of healthcare services provided by the institution, which began as a charitable dispensary and has since evolved into a multi-speciality hospital.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the Marwari community has played a significant role in shaping Assam’s development through its contributions to trade, commerce, healthcare, culture and public welfare.

He also stressed that the community’s long association with the state makes it an integral part of Assam’s social fabric. Referring to attempts to describe Assam’s Marwari community as “non-Assamese,” Sarma said such characterisations were misplaced, adding that the community had contributed to the state’s progress alongside Assamese society.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged Marwari Hospital’s role in public healthcare, noting that the institution has served the people of Assam and the Northeast for 110 years by providing quality medical services while continuing its tradition of charitable healthcare.

A major highlight of the event was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to renowned neurologist Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah, founder of GNRC Hospitals and the Universal Health Mission. He was honoured for his pioneering work in neurosciences and for expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare across Northeast India.

The programme also witnessed the unveiling of a commemorative souvenir marking the hospital’s 110th anniversary. In addition, several senior doctors and healthcare professionals associated with Marwari Hospital were felicitated for their dedicated and long-standing service to the institution.

Founded as the Marwari Charitable Dispensary, Shree Marwari Databya Aushadhalaya has grown over the past 110 years into one of Assam’s prominent healthcare institutions. While adopting modern medical facilities, the hospital has continued to uphold its founding principles of accessible and affordable healthcare.

The anniversary celebrations reflected not only the institution’s historical legacy but also its continuing role in Assam’s healthcare landscape. The participation of the Chief Minister underscored the significance of community-led healthcare institutions in complementing public health services and expanding access to quality medical care.
