Assam Explores Trade and Energy Opportunities in High-Level Meetings with Union Ministers
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held separate meetings with Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Hardeep Singh Puri to explore opportunities in international trade, entrepreneurship, agriculture, tea exports and hydrocarbon development.

NEW DELHI- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday held separate meetings with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, focusing on enhancing Assam’s role in India’s trade and energy sectors while creating new growth opportunities for businesses, farmers and industry.
Following his meeting with Goyal at Vanijya Bhawan, the Chief Minister said India’s recently concluded Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) have the potential to unlock significant opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses across the country, including Assam.
Sarma complimented the Union Commerce Ministry for successfully concluding complex international trade negotiations and discussed ways to ensure that the benefits of these agreements reach small businesses, farmers and producers in Assam.

According to the Chief Minister, the discussions focused on improving market access for local enterprises and agricultural producers, enabling them to tap into emerging export opportunities arising from India’s expanding trade partnerships. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that grassroots stakeholders are able to benefit from the economic opportunities created by increased international trade.
The meeting also addressed issues concerning Assam’s tea industry, one of the state’s most important economic sectors. Sarma said both sides discussed measures to resolve challenges faced by the industry and explore ways to strengthen its competitiveness in domestic and international markets.

In a separate meeting, the Chief Minister met Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening Assam’s hydrocarbon sector and increasing the state’s contribution to India’s energy growth.
Sarma described the discussions as productive and noted that the Union Minister shared valuable insights on global energy trends and the evolving energy landscape.

The leaders reviewed opportunities to expand hydrocarbon exploration across Assam and enhance production from existing oil and gas fields. Discussions also focused on leveraging the state’s rich natural resources to support India’s growing energy requirements and strengthen national energy security.
Assam occupies a significant place in India’s oil and natural gas industry and has historically served as one of the country’s major hydrocarbon-producing regions. The state government has been seeking greater investments in exploration, production and energy infrastructure to maximise the sector’s economic potential.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that both the Free Trade Agreements and expanded energy sector initiatives would contribute to entrepreneurship, exports, industrial growth and employment generation, while enabling Assam to play a larger role in India’s broader development trajectory.
The twin meetings reflect the state’s efforts to align its economic priorities with national initiatives in trade, industry and energy, with a focus on strengthening key sectors such as agriculture, tea, small businesses and hydrocarbons.
