Sarma on Monday met Japanese Ambassador to India Ono Keiichi at the envoy’s official residence in New Delhi, where the two discussed emerging opportunities for Assam following the recently concluded India-Japan Summit.

The Japanese Ambassador also hosted the Chief Minister for Cha-no-yu, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

“I am grateful to H.E. Mr. Ono Keiichi, Ambassador of Japan to India, for hosting me at his residence in New Delhi for Cha-no-yu, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony,” Sarma said in a post on X.

The Chief Minister described the discussions as a “productive exchange” on emerging areas of cooperation between Assam and Japan.

Assam Explores Opportunities After India-Japan Summit

Sarma said the meeting included discussions on the outcomes of the recently concluded India-Japan Summit and the opportunities it could create for Assam.

The talks focused particularly on semiconductor research, clean energy and Japanese language training — sectors that combine the state’s industrial ambitions with its growing emphasis on technology and skill development.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed Assam’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan.

Assam’s interest in semiconductor cooperation comes as the state seeks to build a wider ecosystem around high-technology manufacturing and strengthen its position in India’s emerging semiconductor industry.

Research collaboration and technical cooperation with Japan could complement the state’s efforts to develop skills, supporting industries and specialised capabilities in the sector.

Clean Energy Emerges as Key Area of Cooperation

Clean energy was another major area discussed during the meeting.

Assam has been seeking investment and technical collaboration in sectors that can support industrial growth while addressing long-term energy and environmental requirements.

Japan’s experience in advanced technologies and clean energy systems could create opportunities for cooperation as Assam seeks to expand its industrial base and attract international investment.

The discussions indicate that the state is looking beyond conventional investment and exploring partnerships involving technology, research and knowledge exchange.

Japanese Language Training Could Support Employment

Japanese language training also featured in the discussions, reflecting the growing importance of human resource development in Assam’s engagement with Japan.

Language skills could help prepare young people from the state for educational, technical and employment opportunities linked to Japanese companies and institutions.

As economic and industrial ties expand, language training could also support companies seeking workers with both technical qualifications and the ability to communicate in Japanese.

This adds a human resource dimension to Assam’s broader engagement with Japan, alongside investment, technology and infrastructure cooperation.

Assam Seeks Wider Role in India-Japan Partnership

The meeting comes amid growing engagement between Assam and Japan in areas including industry, technology, skill development and infrastructure.

The state has been seeking Japanese investment and technical collaboration, particularly in high-technology manufacturing, renewable energy and human resource development.

The latest discussions suggest that Assam wants to position itself as an active regional participant in the wider India-Japan partnership rather than remain only a destination for individual investment projects.

By focusing on semiconductors, clean energy and language training, the state is seeking cooperation across technology, sustainable development and workforce preparation.

Sarma said Assam remains committed to contributing meaningfully to the growing strategic partnership between India and Japan.
