Assam: Nagaon Admin demolished Homes Of Accused who set Batadraba Police Station on Fire

GUWAHATI- The Nagaon District Administration on Sunday demolished houses of those allegedly involved in burning of Batadraba police station on Saturday and arrested several accused in connection with the case.

Safiqul Islam, a 39-year-old fisherman from Salonabori village, who allegedly died in police custody on Saturday. An angry mob attacked policemen at Batadraba police station on Saturday alleging that Islam died due to torture by police in their custody.

Safiqul’s family members along with hundreds of villagers brought his body to the Batadraba Police Station and started protesting. The protest ended in a scuffle between the mob and the police. The mob vandalised the police station and set it on fire. Two policemen were injured in the incident.

Islam’s family alleged that he was picked up by police on Friday and police demanded Rs 10,000 and a duck from his wife. When his wife came to the police station on Saturday morning, islam was already admitted to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Assam‘s director general of police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta denied the family’s allegation. He said Islam was picked up by police from a footpath where he was found lying in a drunken state. He was booked after medical check up. The next day he was released and handed over to his wife. His wife even gave him some water/food. Later he complained of sickness and he was taken to two hospitals, one after another. Unfortunately he was declared dead,”

He said in a social media post “ We take the unfortunate death of Safiqul Islam very seriously and have put the OC of Batadraba thana on suspension and rest of the staff Closed. If there is any foul play at our end, we mean to find that and punish the guilty according to the law. No two thoughts.”
