HAILAKANDI- Two girls were allegedly raped and one of them succumbed to her injuries in Assam’s Hailkandi district, police said on Thursday.
Two persons were arrested in connection with the crime, and a manhunt has been launched to nab the third suspect, a police officer said.
Two school-going girls, residents of Barnie Brease tea estate, were kidnapped by some men on Tuesday night and taken to a dense forest in Mohanpur area, where they were allegedly raped, officer-in-charge of Algapur police station, Mrinal Das, said.
Police launched a search operation for them following a complaint by the father of one of the girls and they were found to be in a serious condition.
They were admitted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital and one of them died there on Wednesday, he said.
Following the incident, police arrested two accused and booked them under sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, he said.
