NEW DELHI- A devastating fire ripped through a five-storey building in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area (Hauz Rani locality) this morning, killing at least 21 people and injuring several others. Many of the deceased are reported to be foreign nationals, including medical tourists from countries such as Liberia, Nigeria, Mozambique, Bangladesh, and Central Asia, along with some Indian victims.
The blaze broke out around 8:30–8:50 AM in the basement of Lemon Green Restaurant, quickly spreading to the Flourish Stay B&B hotel on the upper floors.
Fire services received the call and rushed multiple tenders (reports mention 8–10 units) to the scene. Rescue teams, including police and local residents, evacuated 37–47 people. Some victims jumped from higher floors in panic, with dramatic visuals showing residents holding mattresses to break falls.

21 deaths confirmed (many declared brought dead at hospitals like Max Saket). A significant number suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation. Several hospitalized; some in critical condition. Ten police personnel were also injured during operations.
Foreign nationals formed a large portion of the guests, many in Delhi for medical treatment at nearby Max Hospital.
Fire officials stated they controlled the blaze relatively quickly but faced challenges due to the building’s layout and the high number of occupants. Forensic experts have arrived at the site for investigation.

The building reportedly lacked a mandatory fire No Objection Certificate (NOC). It was licensed under Delhi’s Bed & Breakfast scheme for only about six rooms but allegedly operated far more (up to 25). It had just one narrow exit, contributing to the high casualties.
An FIR has been registered against the owner/operator for culpable homicide and other charges. Authorities are probing possible electrical faults or other causes, along with licensing and safety violations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief and announced ex-gratia from the PMNRF: ₹2 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to the injured.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other leaders have also offered condolences, with local administration coordinating relief.
This incident is one of the deadliest fires in Delhi in recent years, highlighting ongoing concerns about fire safety in densely populated commercial-residential areas and unregulated hospitality establishments.
