Manipur: Meitei Women Protest and Urge Amit Shah to Restore Peace

The situation in Manipur remains volatile as authorities work to restore normalcy and address the concerns raised by the protesting women.

IMPHAL- Women from three localities in Thongju Assembly Constituency staged a sit-in protest at Thongju Bokul Makhong Village, urging Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene and restore peace in Manipur.

The demonstrators, primarily Meitei women, voiced their concerns over the state’s prolonged unrest, which has persisted for two years. They highlighted the efforts of Village Volunteers who defended their communities amid ongoing violence. However, following the Union Home Minister’s directives, many volunteers have surrendered their arms to the state government.

Call for Action Against Violence

Speaking at the protest, activist Elika Thongam emphasized that the Meitei community values peace and state integrity. She urged the government to take strict action against those responsible for instigating violence.

The protestors also called on the Centre to enforce its directives, particularly regarding incidents that have defied the Home Minister’s orders on free movement in the region.

Weapons Surrender and Security Operations

Despite the extended deadline for the voluntary surrender of looted weapons until March 6, people continue to turn in arms at local police stations and security camps.

Meanwhile, security forces have intensified search operations across Manipur. On March 7, police recovered weapons, ammunition, explosives, and military-grade equipment from districts including Imphal East, Jiribam, Ukhrul, and Tengnoupal.

The situation in Manipur remains volatile as authorities work to restore normalcy and address the concerns raised by the protesting women.
