IMPHAL— One person sustained bullet injuries after security forces opened fire when a crowd advanced towards a venue hosting a programme attended by CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh in Thoubal district on Tuesday, police said.
The incident took place during the chief minister’s visit to Wangjing Tentha for the inauguration of a newly constructed Block Development Office (BDO). According to police, a large group of individuals armed with stones and catapults moved towards the function site with an apparent intent to vandalise the newly built facility.

In an official statement, police said that repeated warnings and appeals were made to disperse the crowd. However, the group continued to advance aggressively, posing what authorities described as a serious threat to public property, dignitaries present at the venue, and overall law and order.
“Minimum necessary force was applied, and as a last resort, controlled firing was undertaken in strict adherence to established protocols to disperse the mob and neutralise the threat,” the statement said.
