‘Purple City’ Initiative Aims to Improve Air Quality and Urban Sustainability in Guwahati
The Assam government has launched an ambitious urban greening initiative to transform Guwahati into a "Purple City" by planting thousands of flowering and shade-giving trees along key roads and public spaces.

GUWAHATI- The Assam government has announced an ambitious plan to transform Guwahati into a “Purple City” through a large-scale tree plantation campaign aimed at enhancing urban greenery, improving environmental sustainability and creating a more livable city.
The initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, envisages the plantation of thousands of trees across the city, with the first phase focusing on planting more than 1,000 trees along major stretches, including the Khanapara-Jalukbari corridor. The project will primarily feature flowering and shade-giving tree species that are expected to give Guwahati a distinctive purple bloom during the flowering season.
According to officials, the initiative seeks to address multiple environmental challenges facing the rapidly expanding city. These include improving air quality affected by increasing vehicular emissions, mitigating the impact of rising temperatures, strengthening climate resilience and enhancing the city’s overall aesthetic appeal.

The project also aims to develop green corridors along major roads and highways while encouraging greater public participation in environmental conservation and urban beautification.
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is coordinating the programme in collaboration with various government departments and local stakeholders. Authorities have indicated that native and climate-resilient tree species will be selected to improve survival rates and ensure long-term ecological benefits.
Speaking about the initiative, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the project forms part of the government’s broader vision of making Guwahati one of the greenest and most livable cities in Northeast India. He also indicated that similar urban greening initiatives are planned for other parts of Assam.

The announcement comes alongside other environmental and infrastructure initiatives undertaken by the state government, including budgetary allocations for environmental conservation and hydropower development.
Environmental experts have broadly welcomed the initiative, describing urban tree plantation as an important step towards sustainable city planning. However, they have also stressed the need for regular maintenance, community participation and effective monitoring to ensure that the planted saplings survive and mature.
The “Purple City” project is expected to be implemented in phases, with additional roads, public spaces and neighbourhoods proposed for plantation in the coming months. If successfully executed, the initiative could contribute significantly to improving Guwahati’s environmental quality while enhancing its visual identity and resilience against climate-related challenges.
