His appointment has sparked widespread reactions, with supporters hailing it as a strategic move to reinvigorate the party ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

The decision comes at a critical juncture for the Congress in Assam, which has been navigating internal challenges and electoral setbacks.

Gogoi’s appointment is seen as an effort to leverage his national stature and regional connect to unify the party and counter the BJP’s dominance.

The outgoing president, Bhupen Kumar Borah, appointed on July 24, 2021, led the APCC through a turbulent period marked by defections and factionalism. The Congress high command, acknowledging Borah’s contributions, emphasized the need for fresh leadership to galvanize the party’s base. The inclusion of three Working Presidents aims to ensure broader representation and grassroots engagement.

As Assam gears up for the 2026 polls, Gogoi’s leadership will be pivotal in addressing regional issues like ethnic tensions, economic challenges, and the BJP’s strong organizational machinery. The APCC’s Political Affairs Committee, reconstituted in January 2023, will likely play a key role in strategizing under Gogoi’s helm.
