GUWAHATI: The Assam Legislative Assembly descended into chaos today as tensions flared between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties, including the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). The turmoil resulted in protests, walkouts, and multiple adjournments, following an alleged attack on Deputy Speaker Numal Momin by Congress MLA Nurul Huda and calls for action against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi for previous aggressive behavior toward opposition members.

The unrest was reportedly triggered by an incident outside the Assembly premises, where Congress MLA Nurul Huda allegedly attacked Deputy Speaker Numal Momin. This followed an earlier confrontation on Friday, March 21, 2025, when BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi allegedly attempted to physically assault opposition MLAs inside the Assembly. In response, Congress lawmakers staged a sit-in protest outside the Speaker’s chamber, demanding strict action against Kurmi.

In today’s session, opposition MLAs escalated their protests. Congress legislators arrived dressed in black as a symbolic demonstration against Kurmi’s actions, while AIUDF MLAs entered the Assembly carrying bamboo barricades, citing safety concerns. These actions set the tone for a highly charged session.

Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, representing Congress, condemned the Friday incident, accusing Kurmi of attempting to assault opposition members. Saikia demanded accountability and safety assurances from Speaker Biswajit Daimary, arguing that the ruling party’s inaction had emboldened such behavior.

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam echoed these concerns, stating that the Speaker’s lack of response left opposition members feeling vulnerable, justifying their decision to bring bamboo shields into the Assembly.

As tensions peaked, members from both sides resorted to shouting slogans and trading accusations. Unable to restore order, the Speaker adjourned the House twice. The opposition later staged a walkout, alleging a lack of safety and accusing the ruling party of displaying a “fascist attitude.” Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi also criticized the BJP’s conduct in a statement following the walkout.

The political fallout from today’s uproar is expected to dominate Assam’s political discourse in the coming days.
