Mizoram: Over 80 Families Evacuated as River Overflows in Lunglei District
Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered flooding, landslides and road blockages across Mizoram, prompting the evacuation of more than 80 families while authorities monitor the situation.
AIZAWL- More than 80 families have been evacuated to safer locations after the Khawthlangtuipui River overflowed in Mizoram’s Lunglei district along the Bangladesh border following continuous heavy rainfall over the past week, officials said.
According to officials, persistent rainfall caused the river to swell, leading to flooding in low-lying areas of the border district.
In Tlabung town, 42 families were shifted to safer places after their houses were fully or partially submerged due to the rising water level of the Khawthlangtuipui River. Around 40 more families from Tipperaghat village under the Tlabung sub-division were also evacuated as floodwaters inundated the area.

Authorities said landslides, rockfalls and other rain-related incidents have been reported from more than 29 locations across the state. No casualties or loss of life have been reported so far.
Road connectivity has also been severely affected. National Highway 54 remains blocked after a massive landslide near Bualte village in Lunglei district, leaving several tourists stranded for the past four days. The highway closure has disrupted connectivity between the southern districts of Lawngtlai and Siaha and the rest of the state.
The Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei highway has also been blocked following major rockfalls and landslides at Ngaizel on the southern outskirts of Aizawl, officials added.

State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation (DM&R) Minister Lalnilawma has urged residents to remain vigilant as continuous rainfall continues to trigger disasters across Mizoram.
The minister visited a landslide site near the Ngaizel filing station on Thursday, where he reviewed the situation and expressed concern over the hardships faced by affected families.
He assured that financial assistance and other relief measures would be provided promptly and transparently to disaster-affected people in accordance with existing rules and legal provisions.
Authorities continue to monitor the weather and have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as rainfall persists.
