The 16th edition of Captain Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra, Memorial Football Tournament organized by the Indian Army culminated on 08 March at Army Polo Ground, Dibrugarh. The two week long tournament saw 24 teams displaying their talent as they enthusiastically competed for the coveted Trophy.
Four girls teams also showcased their mettle in their maiden participation. During the final match the teams displayed excellent sportsmanship and enthralled the spectators. In the closely fought finals, the girls’ team from Khowang Girls College and the boys’ team from Kamargaon College emerged as the champions.
Incidentally, the champion boys’ team belonged to Capt Jintu Gogoi’s native village. The closing ceremony was attended by senior military officers and civil dignitaries. Prahlad Chandra Tasa, Padma Shri presented the medals and prizes to the winners and runners-up teams.
The tournament received an overwhelming response from local population. The tournament organised by the Indian Army not only promoted budding talents but also propagated the spirit of ‘Peace and Progress through Sports’.
