Assam: Guwahati Students Learn Hands-On Water Testing
Aaranyak and partner organisations conducted a practical water testing and awareness programme at Krishnanagar Vidyapeeth High School to sensitise students about water conservation and pollution.

GUWAHATI- Amid growing global concerns over water scarcity and pollution, biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak, in collaboration with the Assam Pollution Control Board, Samagra Shiksha Axom and Wipro Earthian, organised a water testing and outreach programme at Krishnanagar Vidyapeeth High School on May 13.
The initiative aimed to sensitise students to the growing water crisis through hands-on scientific learning and practical environmental engagement.
Organisers said the programme was conducted against the backdrop of increasing global concern over water availability and pollution. According to international estimates cited during the event, nearly 2.1 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water, while climate change and pollution continue to worsen water insecurity.

The programme also referred to a recent United Nations report warning that the Earth’s water reservoirs are being exploited beyond renewable limits, pushing several regions toward a long-term water crisis.
Under the guidance of Aaranyak officials Tikendrajit Gogoi and Geetashree Sarma, students participated in real-time water quality testing using samples collected from the school campus as well as their homes.
The students tested various water quality parameters including pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, alkalinity, chloride, nitrate, iron, and fluoride, enabling them to understand scientific methods of water assessment through practical experience.

The programme also highlighted the contrasting water-related challenges faced by Guwahati, where several localities experience drinking water shortages while others regularly face floods and waterlogging during monsoon seasons.
As part of the exercise, students carried out a water audit within the school campus and were encouraged to study water usage patterns in their homes and neighbourhoods. They were also assigned small case studies to document public attitudes toward water pollution and conservation practices.
Speaking during the programme, Pratisma Rabha, a Class VIII student, said the activities helped students better understand water-related issues affecting their surroundings. She also noted that the programme introduced students to subjects such as fluoride and arsenic contamination and their impact on human health.

Senior Science Teacher Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma described the initiative as an effective example of experiential learning that connects classroom lessons with real-world environmental challenges.
The event was coordinated by Geetashree Sarma of Aaranyak’s Environment Education and Capacity Building Division and aligned with the objectives of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), which promotes sustainable living and environmental awareness.
Organisers stated that the programme reflects Aaranyak’s continued efforts to strengthen environmental literacy and scientific awareness among students across Assam.
