GUWAHATI — In a grand ceremony today at the Khanapara Veterinary College playground, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma took the oath of office for a historic second consecutive term as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam. This marks the first time a non-Congress leader in the state has secured back-to-back tenures, solidifying the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) “triple-engine” growth narrative in the region.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Dr. Sarma at 11:40 AM. The star-studded event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several other top leaders including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Minister Designate

Alongside the Chief Minister, four other legislators were sworn in to the new cabinet:

Rameswar Teli (BJP)-   A senior tea-tribe leader, Rameswar Teli won from the Duliajan constituency in 2026 Assembly elections. He had contested from the same seat in 2001 and 2011. Significantly, Teli has been a part of the Union Cabinet and had served as State for Food Processing Industries and later for Petroleum and Natural Gas during the second term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2024 but returned to Assam Assembly in 2026.

Atul Bora (Asom Gana Parishad – AGP)-  MLAs from NDA allies are also set to take oath as ministers in Assam cabinet today. Atul Bora, the president of the Asom Gana Parishad will take oath along with Himanta Biswa Sarma. Bora who won from the Bokakhat seat had served as a Cabinet minister in both earlier BJP-led governments in Assam.

Charan Boro (Bodoland People’s Front – BPF)-  Charan Boro has served as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Assam. A member of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), he represents the Majbat constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly, a seat he has held since 2016.

Ajanta Neog (BJP)-     BJP leader Ajanta Neog has won the Assembly election from Golaghat seat for a sixth straight term. The 62-year-old politician joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2020 after Himanta Sarma jumped ships from Congress. She is considered as one the closest political colleagues of Sarma. Neog was first elected to the Assembly in 2001 as Congress leader and served as the first woman politician to hold the position of Finance Minister.

Additionally, Dr. Sarma announced that Ranjeet Kumar Dass is the ruling alliance’s candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The new government comes to power following a landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, where the NDA secured 102 out of 126 seats. BJP: 82 seats (surpassing its own majority mark),  AGP: 10 seats  and  BPF: 10 seats

Sarma is the first non-Congress leader in the state to assume charge as the CM for a second successive term.

This will be the third NDA government in the state, with the alliance first coming to power in 2016 under the leadership of now Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The opposition Congress-led alliance was reduced to just 21 seats, with the Indian National Congress winning only 19.
