According to the case status available on the High Court’s website, the petition was filed on April 20. The development comes after a series of legal proceedings across multiple courts over the past weeks.

Earlier, on April 10, the Telangana High Court had granted Khera a one-week transit anticipatory bail, allowing him time to approach a court with appropriate jurisdiction. The plea had been filed in Hyderabad, where Khera reportedly maintains a residence.

However, the Assam Police challenged this relief before the Supreme Court of India. On April 15, the apex court stayed the Telangana High Court’s order granting transit bail. The bench clarified that if Khera files for anticipatory bail before a competent court in Assam, the Supreme Court’s interim order would not prejudice the consideration of such an application.

Subsequently, on April 17, the Supreme Court declined Khera’s request to vacate the stay or extend the duration of the transit bail. The Court also emphasised that neither its observations nor those of the Telangana High Court should influence the adjudication of Khera’s anticipatory bail plea by the appropriate court.

In this context, Khera has now moved the Gauhati High Court. The FIR against him has been registered at the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to cheating, forgery, defamation, and intentional insult.

The controversy stems from Khera’s claims that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma holds three passports, an allegation that has been contested. Assam Police had earlier conducted searches at Khera’s residence in Delhi and also travelled to Hyderabad in connection with the investigation.

Khera, who serves as Chairman of the Media & Publicity Department of the Congress and is a member of its Working Committee, now awaits the High Court’s consideration of his anticipatory bail plea.
