GUWAHATI- The Indian Metrological Department ( IMD ) has issued a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday, June 2. It has predicted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rains (over 204.4 mm) on Wednesday, May 29, and heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) between May 30 and June 2.
It has also issued an orange alert for Arunachal Pradesh, which is facing heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is monitoring the situation following the landfall of Cyclone Remal, which has left a trail of heavy rains and landslides in the region, as per officials.
CM Sarma has ordered district authorities to reach out to the affected people and provide assistance. He has also asked district commissioners to pay ex-gratia with immediate effect to the next of kin of those who died, according to an official.
Four people have been killed and 18 injured due to heavy rains and storm in Assam, as reported by the PTI.
In Manipur, flooding of rivers has resulted in waterlogging in parts of Imphal East and Imphal West. Schools will remain closed in the affected areas as a precautionary measure.

In Mizoram, the death count in multiple landslides mounted to 29 after four more bodies were recovered from various places, a police officer said today.
Meanwhile, at least 36 people were killed in heavy rains and landslides in four northeastern states on Tuesday, May 28, under the impact of Cyclone Remal while normal life came to a grinding halt in all the eight states of the region with road and rail links affected, officials said.
