NEW DELHI- India and China made a joint announcement on Monday regarding the revival of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage along with a plan to reinstate direct flights, a move seen as a step towards normalisation of relations more than two and a half months after the two countries completed the disengagement process in eastern Ladakh.
These decisions were made after Foreign Secretary Mr Vikram Misri had a meeting with the Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, Mr Sun Weidong, during which he was able to receive clarification on a broad range of issues in China.

The Indian ministry of external affairs also laid out that they both agreed to convene an initial meeting of the Indian and Chinese wiring experts to discuss ways in resuming the sharing of hydrological information and other aid with respect to rivers with China.
Furthermore, the Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs met with Wang Yi the Foreign Minister of China, and Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China.

Indian external affairs minister suggests that both Misri and Sun made a systematic review of bilateral ties and decided that people-focused policies must be introduced to ‘stabilise and rebuild’ the relations, the MEA noted.
“The two parties resolved in this respect to commence the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in the summer of 2025, the proper authorities will work out the specifics on how to do it,” it noted.

The Ministry also mentioned, “The resumption of the provision of hydrological data and other cooperation on transborder rivers will be discussed in the next meeting of the India-China expert level mechanism, which will be held at the earliest.”
In this regard, “They reached a consensus to reinstate direct air connectivity between the two nations, and the competent authorities from both countries will convene and later formulate a new agreement in this regard at the earliest possible opportunity,” explains the statement.

“They have also expressed their sympathy to the media and other people of India so that there can be more exchanges between these two great countries,” the Ministry explained further.
He confirmed “the two sides also agreed to hold an early meeting of the India-China expert level mechanism to discuss resumption of provision of hydrological data and other cooperation pertaining to transborder rivers.”

The Ministry also spoke of the conversation between the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping in Kazan in October last year.
The flights and Kailash Mansarovar Yatra were both put on hold in 2020.
“The two sides are aware that 2025 marks the 75th year of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China. This, therefore, should be used to carry out in redoubled public diplomacy at each country to create better awareness about each other and restore mutual trust and confidence among the public,” said the MEA.
