PM Modi to Visit Assam on January 17–18

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on January 17–18 to attend a historic Bodo cultural event, launch a major highway project, and flag off new train services.

GUWAHATI-   Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Assam from January 17 to 18, during which he is scheduled to participate in a major cultural event in Guwahati and inaugurate key infrastructure and railway projects in Kaliabor, Nagaon district, according to a release issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

On January 17, at around 6 pm, the Prime Minister will attend “Bagurumba Dwhou 2026” at the Sarusajai Sports Stadium in Guwahati. The programme is being described as a historic cultural event celebrating the rich heritage of the Bodo community. More than 10,000 artists from the Bodo community are expected to perform the traditional Bagurumba dance in a single, synchronised presentation. Participants from 81 Legislative Assembly constituencies across 23 districts of Assam will take part in the event.

On January 18, at around 11 am, the Prime Minister will perform the Bhoomi Pujan for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, an 86-kilometre highway project worth over ₹6,950 crore. The project involves the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of National Highway-715 and includes a 35-kilometre elevated wildlife corridor passing through Kaziranga National Park, a 21-kilometre bypass section, and the widening of 30 kilometres of existing highway.

Officials said the environmentally conscious project aims to improve regional connectivity while ensuring the protection of Kaziranga’s biodiversity. The corridor will pass through Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, and Golaghat districts and is expected to significantly improve connectivity to Upper Assam, including Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. The elevated section is designed to ensure uninterrupted movement of wildlife, reduce human-wildlife conflict, enhance road safety, and lower travel time and accident rates. Bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat are also planned to ease urban congestion and improve mobility.

During the same programme, the Prime Minister will flag off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains — the Guwahati (Kamakhya)–Rohtak Amrit Bharat Express and the Dibrugarh–Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) Amrit Bharat Express. These services are expected to strengthen rail connectivity between the Northeast and northern parts of the country, facilitating safer and more convenient travel.

The visit underscores a combination of cultural recognition and infrastructure development, highlighting the Centre’s focus on heritage promotion and connectivity enhancement in the Northeast.
