Assam Crime Branch Summons Congress MP Randeep Surjewala in Riniki Bhuyan Sarma Case
The Assam Crime Branch has summoned senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala amid an expanding investigation into allegations made by party spokesperson Pawan Khera against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

GUWAHATI- The Assam Crime Branch has formally summoned senior Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala to appear before investigators in Guwahati on May 23, 2026, in connection with an ongoing probe linked to controversial remarks made by Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
The development marks a further escalation in the political confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Indian National Congress in Assam.
According to officials, the Crime Branch has broadened the scope of its investigation following extensive interrogations of Pawan Khera earlier this month. Investigators are reportedly examining related public statements, media interactions, and coordinated social media activity surrounding the allegations.

The controversy began in April after Khera, during a press conference, alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possessed multiple international passports and undisclosed foreign assets. Following the remarks, criminal complaints were filed under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, leading to the registration of a formal investigation by the Assam Police.
Congress leaders have sharply criticised the police action. Senior Assam Congress leader Ripun Bora described the repeated summons and interrogations as “routine harassment” and accused the state government of pursuing a “personal vendetta” against opposition leaders.

The Congress party has maintained that the investigation is politically motivated. After undergoing nearly 10 hours of questioning earlier, Pawan Khera stated that while he would cooperate with legal procedures, the party would continue its political campaign against the BJP-led Assam government.
The BJP, however, has defended the investigation, arguing that the matter concerns accountability and the standards of public discourse. Party representatives said the police were acting within the framework of the law and that defamatory or fabricated allegations could not be normalised in political debates.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had stated that the state police would pursue the case “to its logical conclusion” to ensure that what he termed “uncivilised and fabricated language” is not used irresponsibly in public life.
The case is expected to further intensify the already strained political atmosphere in Assam ahead of upcoming political campaigns and parliamentary mobilisation by both parties.
