Assam: Army hosts 16th Captain Jintu Gogoi Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament in Dibrugarh

The Indian Army is conducting the 16th Captain Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament at Army Polo Ground, Paltan Bazar, Dibrugarh from 23 February to 05 March 2020.
The tournament is conducted as a tribute in the memory of brave heart who made the supreme sacrifice during Kargil Operations and Assam’s ‘Bir Chilarai’ Captain Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra.
This tournament since 2004, has continued to evolve with time and has witnessed phenomenal response from local teams. This year a total of 24 teams including four girl teams would be competing for the coveted Championship.
Other highlight of this year’s tournament is the maiden participation by four teams of various Tea Estates of Upper Assam.
The tournament was inaugurated in the presence of senior military officers and civilian dignitaries including Dr Nagen Saikia, a renowned Sahitya Akademy Award winning author and Ex-member of the Upper House.
The proud father of Late Captain Jintu Gogoi, Honorary Flying Officer TR Gogoi also blessed the players by his august presence.
The tournament patronises the sporting capabilities of youth of Assam and has been instrumental in propagating the message of ‘Peace and Progress through Sports’.
