According to an official statement issued from Lok Bhavan, leaders of the NDA met the Governor in Guwahati and staked claim to form the government with Sarma as the leader of the coalition.

“The Governor has invited Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to form the new Government in Assam,” the statement said.

The Governor is scheduled to administer the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and members of the Council of Ministers on May 12. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Khanapara Veterinary Field in Guwahati and is expected to witness the presence of senior national leaders, including Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and BJP president Nitin Nabin, among others.

The NDA secured a decisive mandate in the elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party won 82 seats on its own, crossing the majority mark independently for the first time in Assam’s political history. Alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front secured 10 seats each.

Earlier in the day, Sarma was unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislative Party. This was followed by a meeting of NDA partners, where his leadership was formally endorsed. He subsequently met the Governor and submitted letters of support from all 102 elected NDA legislators.

The upcoming term will mark the NDA’s third consecutive government in Assam since the alliance first came to power in 2016 under former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Sarma, who first assumed office in 2021, is set to become the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Assam to serve two consecutive terms. Political observers view the electoral outcome as a reflection of continued support for the BJP-led government’s development agenda and welfare initiatives over the last five years.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress suffered a major setback in the elections, winning only 19 seats, three short of the number required to officially claim the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Attention is now shifting toward the formation of the new cabinet, amid discussions over possible new inductions and representation for alliance partners in the next government.
