Bengal Election: LPG Cylinder, Fuel Pump Used Symbolic “Last Rites” Draw Attention
Election campaigning in West Bengal sees innovative and symbolic protests, with parties using LPG cylinders and petrol dispensers to highlight price concerns.

KOLKATA- Election campaigning in West Bengal has taken a visually striking and symbolic turn, with political workers employing unconventional methods to convey messages around economic concerns, particularly rising fuel prices.
In a recent instance, campaigners staged a mock “last rites” procession, carrying an LPG cylinder and a petrol dispenser as symbolic representations of the financial burden associated with cooking gas and fuel costs. The imagery, intended to evoke the idea of “dying affordability,” drew attention from passersby and on social media platforms.
Such performative protests are not new to Indian electoral politics, but their scale and creativity have become more pronounced during recent campaigns. In the current context, rising prices of essential commodities, including cooking gas and petrol, have emerged as a key talking point among opposition groups.

Political observers note that these symbolic acts are designed to simplify complex economic issues into relatable visual narratives. By using everyday items like LPG cylinders and fuel dispensers, campaigners attempt to connect with voters at a household level, where price changes are most acutely felt.
At the same time, these methods raise questions about the increasing theatricality of electioneering. While some view such demonstrations as effective communication tools in a crowded political landscape, others argue that they risk reducing policy debates to spectacle.

The use of symbolic “last rites” also reflects a broader trend of dramatized protest in Indian politics, where cultural and ritual elements are incorporated to amplify messaging. In West Bengal, a state with a long history of politically charged public demonstrations, such forms of expression continue to evolve.
Authorities have not reported any major disruptions linked to these activities, and campaigning continues across the state with multiple parties intensifying outreach efforts ahead of polling.
As the election season progresses, the use of creative and visual campaign strategies is likely to remain a defining feature, shaping both public engagement and political discourse.
