Manipur Flood Crisis Deepens: Over 1.64 Lakh Affected, Relief Efforts Intensify

IMPHAL— Manipur is grappling with a severe flood crisis as relentless rainfall over the past five days has led to overflowing rivers and breached embankments, affecting over 1.64 lakh people across 643 localities.

Imphal East district remains the worst-hit area, with significant breaches reported in the Kongba River embankments at Bashikhong. Several parts of the capital city, including Khurai, Heingang, Porompat, and Checkon, are submerged.
Key government offices, such as the DC Imphal East complex, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, and the SP Office, have also been inundated.

In response, the state government has established 77 relief camps, providing shelter to approximately 3,917 evacuees. Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities working tirelessly to reach affected areas despite challenges posed by 93 reported landslides that have obstructed key routes.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal has temporarily suspended operations due to flooding on its premises, affecting emergency services and patient admissions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured full support to the flood-affected states in the Northeast, including Manipur. He has spoken with Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.
While water levels in major rivers like the Imphal, Iril, and Nambul have begun to recede, the situation remains critical, with many areas still submerged and residents in urgent need of assistance.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow safety guidelines as relief and rehabilitation efforts are intensified.
