Sikkim: Teesta River flowing above danger level, alert issued

Mantam Bridge connecting Upper Dzongu Tingvong Busty was swept away due to the rise in the water level of the Kanaka River.

GANGTOK- The recent heavy rainfall has caused a significant rise in the Teesta River in Sikkim, prompting the Disaster Management Authority to issue a warning as a precautionary measure.

Despite the warning issued last night, local residents reported that the Teesta River was flowing at a normal volume by this morning.

However, the situation remains under close watch due to the unpredictable nature of the river’s surge and the heavy rainfall.

The Disaster Management Authority has alerted all concerned officers, including Block Development Officers (BDOs), Municipal Executive Officers (MEOs), and Station House Officers (SHOs), to be vigilant.

These officers are responsible for closely monitoring the rising water levels. They have been instructed to evacuate residents living near the Teesta basin and in low-lying areas downstream.

This precautionary measure is aimed at preventing any potential incidents and ensuring the safety of the local population.

In a related incident, the Mantam Bridge connecting Upper Dzongu Tingvong Busty was swept away due to the rise in the water level of the Kanaka River. Reports from Sangkalang Outpost (OP) confirmed the destruction of the bridge.
