Twenty-one people from Bangladesh, who suddenly went missing, were detained by Assam Police in Karimganj district. These Bangladeshi nationals infiltrated India illegally without passports. The group of Bangladeshi citizens had entered Assam from the Sutarkandi India Bangladesh, the international border of Karimganj district of Assam.
The 21 Bangladeshi nationals were handed over to the Bangladesh Rifles and Bangladesh Foreign Ministry officials at the border of Karimganj district by the Assam Border Police and BSF.
“They could not produce any valid document to prove their Indian citizenship. They then said are from Bagerhat district in Khulna division of Bangladesh,” Assam Police said.
During interrogation, the detainees said that they entered India illegally and took up some petty jobs to earn a living, the police officer said.
India has been trying to solve the Bangladeshi infiltration problem since March 25, 1971. However, over the last decade, the cases of Bangladeshi nationals entering in the northeastern states has increased. These Bangladeshi nationals cross the India-Bangladesh border from the hidden boundaries.
The poor and working-class people of Bangladesh find more work opportunities in India. They get easy employment opportunities for higher wages on Indian land. Hence, to protect their livelihood these Bangladeshi people often infiltrate into the border to enter India. Majorly, these Bangldeshis enter India from the border adjacent to Karimganj, Dhubri in Assam.
