Assam Polls 2026: Realignments Reshape Battle
Assam heads into a crucial election amid delimitation changes, shifting alliances, and high-stakes battles like Jorhat, with NDA and opposition recalibrating strategies.

Assam Polls 2026 | As the nomination deadline of March 23 approaches, Assam’s political landscape is undergoing one of its most significant realignments in recent decades, ahead of a single-phase election scheduled for April 9. The polls will be the first to be conducted after the 2023 delimitation exercise, which has substantially altered constituency boundaries and demographic balances.
The Delimitation Factor
The redrawing of constituencies has increased the number of seats classified as “indigenous-majority” to 103, reshaping electoral arithmetic across the state. Political parties are recalibrating their strategies in response to these changes.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has denied tickets to 16 sitting MLAs, including senior figures such as Nandita Garlosa, attributing the decision largely to boundary shifts. The move is seen as an attempt to manage anti-incumbency while adapting to the new electoral map.

For the All India United Democratic Front led by Badruddin Ajmal, delimitation has posed a challenge. Several constituencies where minority voters previously held decisive influence have been reconfigured, compelling the party to adopt a more defensive electoral strategy.
NDA’s Strategic Shift in Bodoland
A key development in the run-up to the polls is the reconfiguration of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
The Bharatiya Janata Party has brought back the Bodoland People’s Front led by Hagrama Mohilary into the alliance after a gap of five years. The BPF has been allocated 11 seats as part of the arrangement.

This decision resulted in the exit of the United People’s Party Liberal, led by Pramod Boro, on March 17. The UPPL is now contesting 21 seats independently, a move that could potentially split votes in key constituencies.
The NDA’s recalibration indicates a strategic preference for established regional influence in BTR, where 15 seats are considered crucial.
Jorhat: A High-Stakes Contest
The electoral contest in Jorhat has emerged as a focal point of the campaign.
Gaurav Gogoi, representing the Congress and currently serving as the state party chief, has chosen to contest from the region, positioning the seat as a symbolic battleground.
The BJP has fielded Hitendra Nath Goswami, a sitting MP, to counter the challenge. The contest is being viewed as a test of whether the Congress can regain ground in Upper Assam, where the BJP has consolidated support in recent election cycles.
Opposition Unity and Internal Strains
The opposition alliance, Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASM), led by the Indian National Congress, has faced internal fluctuations.
The Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, briefly exited the alliance on March 8 before rejoining on March 19 following negotiations over seat-sharing arrangements.
At the same time, the induction of former Congress leaders such as Bhupen Borah and Pradyut Bordoloi into the BJP ahead of the polls has added to the opposition’s challenges.
Key Issues: Welfare vs Identity
The BJP-led campaign is centred on welfare delivery and governance, highlighting initiatives such as the Orunodoi scheme, which provides financial assistance to women, and employment generation claims.
In contrast, the opposition has focused on issues including rising state debt, allegations of “syndicate raj,” and concerns surrounding the political discourse on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Seat Distribution Snapshot
The 126-seat Assembly election is expected to see a full contest across alliances:
- NDA: BJP (89), AGP (26), BPF (11)
- ASM (Opposition): Congress (86+), Raijor Dal (13), AJP (10)
- Others: UPPL (21), AIUDF, AAP
As Assam moves towards polling day, the interplay of delimitation, alliance shifts, and leadership contests is likely to define the outcome in what is shaping up to be a closely watched electoral contest.
