IMPHAL- Fresh violence erupted in Manipur on Saturday night after protestors, agitated by the killing of six people by militants in the Jiribam district, attacked the residences of three state ministers including Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s ancestral house.
Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday held a crucial meeting to review the security situation in Manipur after fresh violence and directed officials to take all possible measures to restore peace in the strife-hit northeastern state.

The review came soon after Shah returned from Maharashtra, where he cancelled election rallies due to the escalating unrest in Manipur.
The outrage sparked on the night of Saturday after the bodies of two women and a child, missing since Monday from a displaced persons’ camp, were recovered from the Barak River in Jiribam. Three other bodies, including a woman and two children, were found on Friday night.

Enraged protestors on Saturday, torched the houses of PWD Minister Govindas Konthoujam at Ningthoukhong, Hiyanglam’s BJP MLA Y Radheshyam at Langmeidong Bazar, Wangjing Tentha’s BJP MLA Paonam Brojen in Thoubal district and Khundrakpam’s Congress MLA Th Lokeshwar in Imphal East district, the officials said.
At least 23 people, who were part of the mob involved in the alleged “ransacking and arson of the houses,” have been arrested, said Manipur Police on Sunday.

However, in response, the government imposed indefinite prohibitory orders in five districts and suspended internet services in parts of the state.
The Manipur Police on November 11 claimed 10 suspected militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with security forces after insurgents in camouflage uniforms and armed with sophisticated weapons fired indiscriminately at Borobekra Police Station and an adjacent CRPF camp at Jakuradhor in Jiribam district.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic strife between the Imphal Valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.
The clashes began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ protested the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Over 220 people have been killed, and thousands have been displaced since the violence erupted.
