Three Church Leaders Killed in Manipur Ambush; Total Shutdown Paralyzes State
Three senior church leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association of India were killed in an ambush in Kangpokpi district, triggering shutdowns, heightened security operations, and political condemnation across the Northeast.

IMPHAL — Three tribal church leaders were killed and four others critically injured after armed militants carried out a surprise ambush along Tiger Road in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. The attack, which took place between Kotlen and Kotzim villages, targeted two vehicles returning from a religious convention in Churachandpur. The victims have been identified as Reverend Vumthang Sitlhou, Reverend Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou, all prominent leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association of India.
The targeted assassination of unarmed religious figures has drawn sharp condemnation from political leaders across the Northeast.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh vehemently condemned the incident as a “dastardly terror act” aimed at derailing the state’s fragile peace process. He visited the survivors at Shija Hospital in Imphal and vowed that the government would use every resource to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio strongly condemned the brutal killings, calling the attack a barbaric and senseless act of violence against innocent lives. He emphasized that terrorism against religious leaders has no place in any civilized society.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma strongly condemns the “brutal and cowardly” killing of three Baptist church leaders in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Wednesday. Labeling the attack on dedicated peacebuilders as entirely unacceptable, the Chief Minister has called upon both the Manipur state government and central authorities to take immediate, decisive action to bring the perpetrators to justice. Sangma emphasized that such violence against community leaders undermines regional stability and demanded a swift response to ensure accountability and prevent further escalation in the area.

A total shutdown was imposed across Sadar Hills along National Highway-2 on Thursday following a deadly ambush attack that claimed the lives of three prominent Thadou Church leaders and left several others injured.
According to reports, the ambush took place on the stretch between Saparmeina and Kotlen when two vehicles carrying church leaders came under attack by armed miscreants while returning to Kangpokpi after attending a conference organised by the United Thadou Baptist Churches.
In response to the incident, Thadou civil bodies announced an immediate flash shutdown across Sadar Hills along NH-2, condemning the killings and demanding justice for the victims.
The incident has triggered tension and widespread condemnation in the area, while security measures are reportedly being intensified along the highway and surrounding vulnerable stretches
In the immediate aftermath of the Tiger Road ambush, security forces launched a massive joint counter-insurgency operation:
Additional columns of the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and state police have cordoned off the entire Kotlen-Kotzim axis to track down the fleeing attackers.
Concurrently, targeted raids in neighboring districts led to the tracking and arrest of active militant cadres belonging to banned insurgent factions, alongside armed suspects captured with illegal weapons in valley areas.
The Chief Minister has issued a stern warning against retaliatory abductions and hostage-taking, stating that state forces have been given a free hand to maintain public order and neutralize any group threatening civilian life.
